Hongdae: Seoul's Youth Culture Epicenter
Called one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world and located right in Mapo-gu, Hongdae is Seoul's most iconic student gathering spot and arts district. Here you can wander through indie music venues, jazz bars, vintage boutiques, and themed cafés, or admire the ever-changing murals of Hongdae Mural Street. On weekends, the neighborhood comes alive with street performers, buskers, pop-up markets, and impromptu dance battles that spill out from the many clubs. And don’t miss the late-night restaurants serving Korean barbecue and fried chicken.

 

A Green Escape: Yeonnam-dong & Gyeongui Line Forest Park
Need a break from Seoul’s bustling pace? Follow the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, a leafy greenway, from Hongdae into Yeonnam-dong. Along the way, you can browse the secondhand titles and reading nooks of Gyeongui Line Book Street, then settle into one of Yeonnam-dong's beloved cafés for coffee and dessert. This is where Seoul catches its breath and is the perfect way to spend a free afternoon.

 

Food, Glorious Food: Mangwon & Riverside Strolls
For an authentic taste of Seoul, head to Mangwon Market, a traditional market beloved for its street food, fresh produce, and unbeatable prices. Grab some tteokbokki and hotteok and then continue on to Mangwon Hangang Park, part of the sprawling green space that lines the Han River. Stroll along riverside paths, watch the sunset over the water, or relax on the grass with a snack from a nearby convenience store—a quintessential Seoul pastime.

 

Seoul's Digital Media Hub: Sangam
Sangam, located on the northwest edge of Mapo-gu, is Seoul's modern face. Home to the Seoul World Cup Stadium and the Digital Media City business district, this neighborhood blends sleek office towers with expansive green space at World Cup Park. In Sangam, you'll glimpse Seoul’s future.

Sogang University
One of South Korea’s top-ranked universities, Sogang University boasts modern facilities and a welcoming American-style campus - urban yet green, with gathering spaces, room to stroll, and inviting nooks for whenever you need focus or relaxation. 
 
Located in the Mapo district of Seoul, Sogang University was founded in 1960 and is South Korea's only Jesuit institution of higher learning. Sogang has built its reputation on a "friend-to-friend" campus culture that blends academic excellence with genuine personal care, drawing students from around the world to learn, connect, and grow.
 
Sogang's close-knit campus sits just steps from Sinchon, one of Seoul's liveliest university neighborhoods, giving students easy access to the city while enjoying an intimate, family-like community that is rare among Seoul's larger universities. 
 
Sogang offers courses across a wide range of colleges, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Media, Arts and Science, Communications, Economics, Business, Natural Sciences, and Engineering, with many taught in English for international and exchange students. Korean language courses are also available at every level, from complete beginner to advanced.
 
Some highlights of Sogang's programming are:
 
  • The “HUG” Buddy Program: Short for "Hands Up for Gathering," HUG pairs incoming international students with local Sogang student “buddies” who help you settle into life in Korea, navigate the campus, and meet new friends. Buddies reach out before the semester even begins and stay involved throughout, organizing field trips, cultural outings, parties, and Korean language tutoring. Whether you're exploring Seoul's neighborhoods, grabbing food together, or just figuring out how registration works, your buddy is there to help. It's one of the best ways to build real friendships with Korean students and experience Korean culture firsthand.
  • Daedongje Annual Spring Festival: Every May, the campus transforms for Daedongje, Sogang's signature two-day Spring festival where academics take a back seat to community and celebration. Food trucks line the streets between campus buildings, student clubs and departments run themed booths and games, and the festival culminates in concerts featuring some of Korea's biggest K-pop and indie artists on the main stage. Past Daedongje lineups have included acts like LE SSERAFIM and 10cm, drawing crowds from across Seoul, as well as the Sogang student body. It's a high-energy, only-in-Korea experience and one of the best ways to feel the full spirit of campus life.
  • International Student Night & Korean Film Festival: To support its closely knit international community, the university hosts dedicated events throughout the year just for exchange and study abroad students. International Student Night brings together students from dozens of countries for performances, food, and cultural showcases, while the Korean Film Festival offers a chance to watch acclaimed Korean cinema with friends and classmates, with discussion afterward. Both are easy, low-pressure ways to meet other international students and dive deeper into Korean culture beyond the classroom.

Course & Credit Information

Language Requirement: None. Classes are taught in English.

 

Summer U.S. Credits:  3-6 credits (1-2 courses)

 

Semester U.S. Credits: 12-15 credits per semester; typical course load is 15 credits. Note: Students who enroll in the Intensive Korean Language Program may take up to 18 credits; additional fee applies.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum GPA 2.50 (Applicants with GPA between 2.30-2.49 will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • Language requirement: None. Open to students with any level of Korean language
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must be currently enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian college or university to apply
  • Official Transcript from your current college or university
  • Official Transcript from your high school
  • Digital passport photo (jpg)
  • Proof of funds - at least $5,000 in bank account (this is a visa requirement that Sogang University will pre-screen - simply to ensure you'll be eligible for a visa)
  • ASA Application. To start a new application or continue an existing application, click here
  • Scan of your valid passport that does not expire sooner than 1 year after the day you plan to return home from abroad. A scan of your valid passport is required to apply for this program. Please submit your passport application by expedited service if you do not have a valid passport.

Housing

Your home away from home.

We place a high priority on safety, housing location, and proximity to school. Housing includes WiFi and is located directly on the Sogang University campus, just steps from your classes.

 

Friends studying abroad together can request to be placed in the same room and we'll do our best to accommodate!

 

On-Campus Residence Hall

ASA student housing in Seoul is in Gonzaga Hall, Sogang University's international dormitory located right on campus. Gonzaga Hall has a "hotel" feel with plenty of amenities, including a gym, on-site laundry, and study and lounge spaces. Rooms are double occupancy, shared with a roommate (who may be Korean, American, or an international student from another country), and comes equipped with 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 wardrobes, air conditioning, high-speed Internet, and a private bathroom shared by just you and your roommate.

 

The building has separate floors or sections for male and female students. You'll have a microwave or hot pot in the dorm, and there are convenience stores, markets, and restaurants close by, both on and around campus, making it easy to grab food any time.

Housing FAQs

Yes, we can usually arrange for friends to live together. Rooms are double occupancy (shared by 2 people). You'll complete a Housing Request Form after being accepted, and you can give us the name of the student or students you want to live with. Roommate requests must be mutual, so be sure your friend requests you back! 

Yes, all rooms are double occupancy.

ASA plans to have all students live in the Gonzaga dormitory. However, if demand is high and extra beds are needed, off-campus private student dormitories will be sourced. ASA will notify you of your living arrangements via email approximately 2 weeks before the start of your program.

A detailed list of what to bring (and what not to bring) will be included in your ASA pre-departure handbook, which will be emailed to you about a month before your program begins.

Meals are not included, but you’ll have a microwave or hot pot in the dorm, and plenty of markets, restaurants, and convenience stores nearby with a variety of fresh and inexpensive food (convenience stores are a big part of Korean food culture!)

The food is great and will be typical of your host country. Be prepared to try new things! If you have any food allergies or dietary needs, please let ASA know as soon as possible and we'll be happy to advise you on your options.

The Gonzaga dormitory is on-campus, just minutes by foot to class.

  • Tuition for the maximum number of credits or courses indicated on the program course offerings page. Enrolling in more than the maximum number of credits/courses (if permitted by the host institution) will result in an additional fee.

  • Academic Credits: Students who receive pre-approval from their home institution can transfer the credits they earn to their home institution.

  • Official Transcript: Final transcript is issued by Sogang University. ASA will provide one free shipment of your final transcript to your U.S. institution.

  • Excursions: Semester programs include 2 day excursions and 1 overnight excursion. Summer programs include 2 day excursions. Locations to be decided.

  • Cultural Activities: Semester and Summer programs include at least 4 cultural activities. Locations and activities to be decided.

  • Internet Access: Students will have free Internet access at their host institution and in their program housing.

  • Airport Pick-Up: Group ground transportation is provided from Seoul (ICN) airport for students who arrive on the official arrival date, by the designated time.

  • Site Director: Students will have an on-site director to assist them with any academic or cultural difficulties they may encounter.

  • Visa Advising: Students are ultimately responsible for obtaining their visa (if required for their term), but ASA will provide detailed, helpful information upon acceptance about which visa students will need and how to go about applying for one.
