• Housing Woes: Navigating Evolving Student Social Needs

• Session Description
  Today’s study abroad students arrive with a wide range of social needs and expectations, from seeking independence and personal space to desiring constant connection and community. When housing arrangements fail to align with these expectations, dissatisfaction, roommate conflict, mental health concerns, and requests to move often follow - which can be challenging and costly. Satisfaction with the social aspects of housing has become so crucial that the wrong fit can even cause some students to return home and miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Through real-world case studies drawn from our shared students’ experiences, this session will explore evolving social needs, offer a forum for sharing ways to respond when these issues arise, and identify strategies for better matching students with a program that meets their unique social needs and expectations - helping to foster more successful and fulfilling study abroad experiences.
• Learning Objectives
  -Explore the evolving social needs and expectations of today's students as they relate to housing abroad.
  -Through case studies and group discussion, attendees will identify creative strategies for responding to socially based housing issues.
  -Attendees will leave with strategies for matching students with housing that meets their social needs and expectations, as well as more effectively collaborating with providers and partners.
• NEW Advising Tool: Session Takeaway
  -Our session team created a new Housing Worksheet that can be used as an Advising Tool during advising sessions, or given to students to be completed as a self-assessment. The worksheet guides students through the housing planning and selection process toward a choice that meets their social needs, with or without the time investment of an advisor meeting - and thus helping to prevent the issues we've been encountering lately when social needs aren't met.
