Cancellation, Travel & Personal Insurance
ASA provides this information AS A REFERENCE ONLY and does not endorse any specific insurance or other product.
It is solely the participant's responsibility to research and understand all terms, inclusions, and exclusions of any insurance policy they choose to purchase.
Availability of plans and coverages may vary by state.
CANCELLATION INSURANCE
Because ASA program fees become non-refundable before the program starts, we strongly encourage purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment.
To have the maximum level of protection against losses for trip cancellation, CFAR (Cancel for Any Reason insurance) is needed, and we do recommend purchasing this. Please be aware that CFAR must be purchased within 15 calendar days of making your initial trip payment, which is often times your deposit.
TRAVEL/TRIP INSURANCE
If you miss the window for CFAR, the other coverages below such as Trip Cancellation Package, Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, etc. can still be purchased up until the day before your departure - and we strongly recommend doing so to protect your investment.
PERSONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE
Student participants are strongly advised to purchase personal liability insurance for the time they will be abroad.
PERSONAL PROPERTY INSURANCE
It is solely the student participant’s responsibility to insure and secure any and all personal property/belongings, as loss, theft, or damage of personal property/belongings can happen while abroad.
One of the most unknown perks of renters or homeowners insurance is that it covers your personal items not just at home, but anywhere in the world! So, if your phone or laptop is stolen while you're overseas, you may have coverage if you or a parent/guardian has this insurance. We recommend contacting your policy provider to inquire about using this benefit. You may need a separate rider or it may be part of your policy. They will also want an itemized list of all the personal effects you want covered.
ASA is NOT responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal property/belongings, including while stored/used in your housing, at your host institution, or any other ASA program space.
CANCELLATION & TRAVEL INSURANCE RESOURCES
*The maximum coverage length available through battleface is 90 days (30 days for FL residents). If your program is longer than 90 days and you want coverage for the full duration of your program, you may check the links to the other providers.
PERSONAL LIABILITY COVERAGE RESOURCES
Regardless of the provider you select, the most popular and useful policies include:
Trip Cancellation Package
This kind of policy typically covers the non-refundable cost of your program in the event you must cancel for a covered reason.
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)
This typically covers cancellation of a covered trip for any reason not otherwise covered by the policy, up to 75% (50% in Florida) of non-refundable trip costs. Purchase conditions apply and this may not be offered in your State.
For many policies, you must purchase within 15 days of initial trip payment, and insure the full amount of any non-refundable trip costs (i.e. your entire trip cost).
Typically, the cancellation must occur no less than 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure date. Refer to policy statements for full details.
Trip Interruption Coverage
Can reimburse up to 150% of your pre-paid and non-refundable trip cost if a portion of a program is missed, or if you must return home early due to unforeseen circumstances, including illness, injury, or death.
Trip Delay Package
Typically, these policies can reimburse up to $200 per day and $2,500 for the costs of meals, local transportation and accommodations when your program is unexpectedly delayed for covered reasons, plus Missed Connection, which can reimburse up to $1,000 for the cost of extra transportation to rejoin the program, additional local expenses, and the cost of missed arrangements.
Baggage Package
A baggage policy typically provides up to $2,500 for reimbursement of lost, stolen, or damaged luggage, sporting equipment and personal effects. Policies can also include Baggage Delay, which in some cases can provide up to $100 per day or $500 per trip to cover the purchase of clothing, toiletries, and other essential items if your luggage is delayed for a specified period of time.
