The City
Aix-en-Provence is located in the south of France in the region of Provence, along the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you can experience traditional French culture in an intimate, accessible setting.
Provence is a breathtaking mixture of rolling countryside and medieval towns and cities. Not only is it a place of amazing beauty, but it is also known for offering some of the best cuisine in the world, using the freshest local ingredients. Provence is one of the wealthiest regions of France, its famous resorts attracting tourists from all over the world. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Provence has a beautiful, mild climate, and an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, creating a sense of light and warmth, as well as a very relaxed atmosphere.
A quaint yet elegant university town, Aix-en-Provence was founded by the Romans in 123 BC. It has been an important educational center in France since the 1400’s, a tradition that IAU carries on in their varied offerings for American students. Aix-en-Provence is also known for its beloved painter, Paul Cézanne, whose works were inspired by the landscape surrounding the city.
Summertime in Aix-en-Provence is filled with music, when two annual festivals gather world-class musicians and directors. You can find classical, jazz, and popular music emanating from outdoor theatres and venues throughout the city.

IAU COLLEGE
Founded in 1957, IAU (Institute for American Universities) is one of the oldest education abroad programs in Europe. In addition, IAU is registered with the French Ministry of Education and recognized by the Rectorat of the Université d’Aix-Marseille.
IAU offers several different semester and summer program options in Aix-en-Provence: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the French Honors Program, and The Marchutz School of Fine Arts.
THE SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is open to students with any level of French, from beginner to advanced. Classes are available in both English and French in a variety of subject areas. It is mandatory for semester students to take at least one French language class. It is not mandatory to take French during the summer sessions.
THE FRENCH HONORS PROGRAM
The French Honors Program is an academic track at The School of Humanities and Social Sciences that is designed for advanced French students and French majors as an opportunity to live and study in a 100% French-speaking environment. The French Honors program provides a full immersion experience, plus optional internships. To participate, students must have and advanced level of French and have taken at least 4 semesters of college French or equivalent.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Students only speak French and will be spoken to only in French by faculty and staff. In addition, students will be placed in homestays where only French is spoken, if available.
- Exclusive receptions, cultural activities and excursions, all in French.
- Lecture series in French on topics such as politics, journalism and cultural history. Students will keep a daily journal of thoughts, feelings and experiences in French. This journal will be examined and discussed in the weekly core class.
- French Language Partner Program with local French university students.
- Semester students have the option to be placed in an internship.
- Semester students may take up to 2 of their courses at the University of Provence Aix-Marseiles I with French students (additional fee of approximately $750 applies).
THE MARCHUTZ SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS
The Marchutz School of Fine Arts offers an interdisciplinary and holistic fine arts program that is open to students with any level of art background and any level of French. Through this unique program, studio art production is combined with study in the liberal arts disciplines. Your art studies will include spontaneous perceptual painting and drawing, intensive critical dialogue, extensive museum visits, and a community of students and artists at all levels.
Located on the “Route de Cézanne,” the school’s location on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence has many advantages. Among them are its light-filled space, the studio’s proximity to the famed Chateaunoir and Saint Victoire, and, most importantly, its calm and contemplative atmosphere, conducive to sustained artistic concentration.
The goal of the Marchutz art program is to help you develop a holistic approach to the study of art and art making. It will enhance your capacity to see and your awareness of the relationship between perception and imagination. You will form an integrative relationship between knowledge and intuition, perception and concept, and self-expression and global awareness.
You will draw and paint – every day, if possible, working from models, children, musicians, and dancers. You will interrelate figure drawing, portraiture, landscape, and still-life with interpretive copies of master works, memory work, and sketchbook journals. Study in museums and reading/writing assignments explore the correspondences between natural and artistic forms, and, finally, group and individual critiques are integral to each student’s process.
Excursions and museum visits are an integral part of the Marchutz program and are included with your program fees. Students will visit small towns and villages, such as St. Remy, Arles, and the Luberon Valley. In addition, semester students typically go on a longer painting trip to Paris, Giverny, or Venice.
Semester students attending the Marchutz School of Fine Arts will take 3 mandatory core art classes: Painting, Drawing, and Art Criticism and Aesthetics. In addition, you’ll take 1 French language class and 1 elective of your choosing at The School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Summer students at Marchutz will take 2 core art classes: Art Criticism and Aesthetics, and a Painting & Drawing class. In addition, summer students may take an optional 3rd course of their choosing at The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (additional fee required).
- All semester programs include 2 day excursions.
- The Marchutz School of Fine Arts Fall semester program includes 2 additional overnight excursions.
- The Marchutz School of Fine Arts Spring semester program includes 1 additional overnight excursion.
- 6-week summer programs include 2 day excursions.
- 3-week summer programs include 1 day excursion.
- The Marchutz School of Fine Arts summer program includes 3 total day excursions.
- Destinations may vary by term.
Past terms have included trips to:
- Le Luberon (day excursion) – Renowned for its natural beauty, Le Luberon is a typical Provençal countryside featuring quaint hilltop villages, stone houses, vineyards, olive groves, and fields of lavender and sunflowers. In the village of Lourmarin, a Renaissance chateau that was once a fortress now hosts concerts and art exhibitions in this very fashionable town.
- Moustiers Sainte Marie & Lac de Sainte Croix (day excursion) – Moustiers Sainte Marie is a medieval village where you can explore the picturesque streets and enjoy a fantastic panoramic view from a 12th century chapel. We’ll also visit the Lac de Saint Croix, a lake known for its beaches and water sports.
- Giverny / Venice (overnight trip- Marchutz School of Fine Arts only) – The Marchutz School of Fine Arts includes one unforgettable, multi-day painting trip every semester. Fall semester students typically enjoy a trip to Giverny, where they will paint and draw in Monet’s garden. Spring students typically visit Venice, where they will paint and draw along the famous canals and lagoon.
Experiences
Getting out and exploring on your own is one of the best parts about studying abroad. Here are just a few of the unforgettable experiences you can have abroad with ASA!
Did you go abroad with ASA and have a memorable experience we should add to this list? Contact us! We'd love to hear from you!
Housing
After being accepted to the program, students will be asked to complete a housing questionnaire. Every effort will be made to place each student in their top choice; however, it is important that students remain flexible and open-minded about their housing placement.
Semester Housing Experience
For the semester terms, the majority of students will live in a French homestay. Under certain conditions, and with prior approval, a limited number of Student Residence Apartments or Semi-independent Homestay placements may be available for students with housing accommodation needs (e.g. mobility concerns, severe allergy, or other wellness concerns). If students would like to request living in a Student Residence Apartment for solely the independent-style living experience, they can request to be placed on a waitlist. Please note there is no guarantee that students will receive a Student Residence Apartment placement since it is based on availability and need.
Summer Housing Experience
For the summer terms, French homestays are a limited housing option. If there is limited availability of French homestays, students may be placed in a Student Residence Apartment.
French Homestays
Demi-pension Homestay - Students living in a shared homestay and receive daily breakfast, 6 dinners per week, and 1 load of laundry per week. Rooms are double or single occupancy. We cannot guarantee a single room. Bathrooms are shared. Homestays generally host 1-3 students a time.
Semi-independent Homestay (no meals) - Students are placed by themselves with a host family but prepare all of their own meals. This option is limited and typically reserved for students with severe allergies or food restrictions. Students have access to the kitchen/kitchenette, appliances, and food storage/supplies. Students are responsible for their own groceries and preparing their own meals.
Student Residence Apartment (no meals)
Rooms are double or triple occupancy. Bathrooms are shared between a maximum of three students. Meals are not included. Students will have access to a fully equipped shared kitchen to prepare meals. Bed linens and towels are included and students will have access to coin operated shared laundry facilities or be within walking distance to laundromat.
All ASA housing includes Internet access and is located in safe neighborhoods, within a reasonable distance from school.
Housing FAQ
Can I room with a friend?
Yes, if there are no major differences in your and your friend's dietary needs and allergies, we are usually able to accommodate requests to live with a same-sex friend. Please keep in mind that roommate requests must be mutual, so be sure your friend requests you back! You will complete a detailed Housing Questionnaire after being accepted to the program, and on this form you can request a roommate.
When will I find out where I'll be living?
ASA will notify you of your living arrangements via email approximately 1-2 weeks before the start of your program. If there is another ASA student in your housing we will include their name and email address.
What if I don't like my host family?
If it is a problem with the homestay and not a language or cultural misunderstanding, ASA will move you to a different homestay right away. We have on-site staff in every city who are there to help students with any issues they encounter while abroad, and who check in periodically with students throughout their stay to ensure all is well.
Will my host family speak English?
No, but there’s no need to worry! Living in a homestay is the best way for you to learn French, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you will improve. Also, don’t forget that they've hosted international students before, so they understand that you are there to learn their language and want to help you.
Will I have a roommate?
Rooms may be single, double or triple occupancy.
What should I bring with me?
A detailed list of what to bring (and what not to bring) will be included in your ASA pre-departure handbook, which will be emailed to you about a month before your program begins. Please consider bringing a small gift for your host, such as a candle, kitchen towel, chocolates, etc.
What is the food like?
The food is great and will be typical of your host country. Be prepared to try new things! If you have any food allergies or dietary needs, please let ASA know as soon as possible and we'll be happy to advise you on your options.
How far will I live from school?
Most housing is located a 15-35 minute walk from school. Please rest assured that we place a high priority on location, and all ASA students live within a reasonable distance from their classes!
