The City

Regularly voted one of the top student cities in the UK, Newcastle is a city steeped in history and home to many cultural and entertainment attractions. Students describe Newcastle as a hidden gem of a city: extremely friendly, easy to navigate, beautiful and so much fun!

The very low cost of living in England’s North East allows students to see more and do more with their savings in Newcastle – enjoying the full range of local attractions on offer and also traveling to UK and European cities on weekends and breaks.

Newcastle is known as the business and social hub of England’s North East. In contrast to its industrial heritage, the city is also known for its environmental awareness and is even planning to become the first Carbon Neutral town in the UK. And while the city centre is famous for nightlife (with more than 250 bars and restaurants within walking distance of campus) surrounding the city students also enjoy the relaxing seaside towns, green villages and ancient ruins and castles. Whether it's following a path laid down by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, visiting the castle where Harry Potter was filmed or unwinding on award-winning sandy beaches, the North East is an amazing and beautiful part of England, beloved by students, staff and alumni!

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

One of England’s highest ranked universities, Newcastle University is AACSB accredited and a member of the prestigious Russell Group, the UK equivalent of the Ivy League. The Russell Group is comprised of the 24 best universities in the UK and includes such institutions as University of Oxford and University of Cambridge.

Newcastle University traces its origins back to the School of Medicine and Surgery, founded in 1834. Today, the university has become a front runner in research excellence and its student-centric ethos and high-level teaching makes for an unrivaled student experience.

Citing its civic responsibility mission, Newcastle University focuses on research that seeks solutions to global challenges, such as aging, sustainability and social renewal. In fact, in 1967, Newcastle awarded Martin Luther King Jr. an honorary degree, making him the first African-American to receive this honor from the university. Additionally, as a large comprehensive research institution in the United Kingdom, Newcastle has 24 academic schools and 40 research institutes and centers and supports over 23,000 students.

Over 27,000 students are enrolled in over 200 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate degree programs. Study Abroad students have access to over 900 modules in a range of subjects.

Students learning will also be supported by world-class specialist facilities, including:

  • High specification labs and clinical skills suites
  • Studios and rehearsal spaces
  • On-campus museum and art gallery
  • 2 commercial farms and a biological field station
  • A sea-going research vessel, coastal station and marine lab
  • £350 million urban regeneration project called Newcastle Helix

Outside of the classroom, Newcastle is consistently ranked top 10 in the UK for competitive sporting achievement and with 65 active sports clubs to join, there’s no shortage of opportunities for students to challenge themselves. In fact, the University has recently invested £30 million into new, state-of-the-art sports facilities!  In addition to sports clubs, students can also choose from over 160 different societies to get involved – from Baking to Beekeeping, Salsa to Social Tennis and Vegan to Video Gaming.

Study Abroad students are also invited to take advantage of the extensive range of support services including Wellbeing, Finance and Career Services.  All the support services are free of charge – this includes 1:1 therapeutic counseling, career planning advice and bespoke staff support for students with seen and unseen disabilities.  Furthermore, all visiting students are assigned a personal tutor (normally a member of academic staff) who will support you throughout your time here.

ASA semester programs in Newcastle include 2 day excursions. Past terms have included trips to:

  • Medieval York – Taking over 150 years to be built, starting in 1220, the magnificent  York Minster is the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. We will also visit The Shambles, a street of traditional timber-framed buildings dating back to the 14th century. And there’s Viking heritage too, as York – then called Jorvik – was once the capital of a Viking territory. We will head back in time to learn more and experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the time.
  • Alnwick Castle – This 1,000-year-old castle is not only one of the largest inhabited castles in England (home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years), it’s also something of a movie star - most notably as the location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter.
  • Surfing at Tynemouth - Tynemouth Longsands Beach is a hub for surfing in England's North East and has produced some well-known British surfers.

Flats are typically composed of 5-8 single occupancy bedrooms and are shared with other international students or degree-seeking students at Newcastle. Each student will have a single bedroom with your own washbasin but share common areas like the bathroom, kitchen, and lounge with flatmates. Internet is provided.

Living in Newcastle University housing gives you a unique opportunity to meet people from all kinds of cultural and social backgrounds and make friends for life. Everything you’d need is walking distance from your Newcastle accommodation – classrooms, libraries, university sports centre, cinema, restaurants, grocery stores, shopping mall, metro, museums, theatre, football stadium and more!

Housing FAQ

Can I room with a friend?

You may request to live with a friend by emailing ASA at hello@academicstudies.com. Roommate requests must be mutual, so be sure your friend requests you back. Newcastle is responsible for hall allocations, so we can't always guarantee that you will be placed in the same flat or residence hall as your friend, but we will be happy to pass along your preference to the university as long as you let us know shortly after you're accepted. You will meet your suitemates upon arrival; they could be from the U.S., the UK, or other countries.

When will I find out where I'll be living?

ASA will notify you of your living arrangements via email approximately 1-2 weeks before the start of your program.

Will I have a roommate?

Rooms are single occupancy, but you will share a flat with 5-8 additional students. Flats are usually all gender.

Are meals included?

No, meals are not included, but your flat will have a kitchen, and grocery stores are within walking distance.

What should I bring with me?

A detailed list of what to bring (and what not to bring) will be included in your ASA pre-departure handbook, which will be emailed to you about a month before your program begins.

How far will I live from school?

Students will have between a 5 - 15 minute walk to campus.
