Internship Details

Interning in Dublin is about flexibility, growth, and experience. You’ll need an open mind, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude, as you will be challenged throughout your placement.

Most internships are with small to medium-sized organizations, since large companies rarely offer short-term placements. Roles are unpaid and entry-level, and your tasks may range from administrative work to hands-on projects.

Opportunities can be limited and may differ from internships in your home country, but that’s part of the experience. This program is first and foremost a cultural immersion that helps you gain global perspective and build cross-cultural skills.

Internship placements are typically located within 25–45 minutes of ASA program housing by public transportation — a comfortable and common commute in a city like Dublin.

All ASA housing is situated in safe, well-connected neighbourhoods close to Dublin’s city canter, with easy access to bus and tram routes, cafés, shops, and cultural landmarks.

  • A global internship experience in Dublin gives you a powerful advantage in your post-college job search.
  • Dublin is one of Europe’s fastest-growing innovation and business hubs — home to major international companies in technology, finance, communications, and the creative industries.
  • As an English-speaking capital with a strong multicultural community, Dublin offers an easy transition for students from around the world.
  • Its compact size and excellent transport links make it simple to explore both the city and the rest of Ireland — or even hop over to other European destinations on weekends.
  • Immerse yourself in Irish culture and hospitality: discover historic neighborhoods, vibrant music and arts scenes, cozy cafés, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes Dublin feel like home.
  • Personalized Placements Matched to your Goals: Our Internship Coordinator has decades of experience placing hundreds of students in Dublin internships. We personally match each student with a host company/organization that aligns with your career goals and academic background.
  • Stellar Advice & Support: Before you depart, you'll have access to our Dublin Internship Coordinator and expert, who will find the ideal placement for you and assist with any questions you have. Once on-site, our Internship Coordinator and local staff are there to provide guidance and support throughout your internship experience – they can help with questions or challenges you experience during your placement, as well as outside of it – such as health, safety, housing, and more. And, we'll have ongoing check-ins with you during your stay to make sure everything is going well.
  • Intercultural Competencies, Skill Building, Cultural Immersion: In addition to professional development, you’ll benefit from living and working in a cosmopolitan environment. You’ll develop cultural fluency and intercultural skills that are sought after in today’s workplace.
  • International Internship Course (IIC): ASA takes your internship beyond your day-today work. You’ll enroll in ASA’s International Internship Course which meets Friday mornings. This course runs alongside the internship to help you reflect on and deepen your placement experience through discussion and shared learning. Drawing on students’ own workplace experiences and assigned readings, seminars encourage an exchange of ideas that challenges students to step beyond their comfort zones, reflect on their observations, and gain new insights about themselves, the world of work, and their broader environment.
  • Academic Credit: Internships are eligible for college credits if you obtain pre-approval from your home institution. We’re happy to assist you by communicating with your home institution and providing any needed information. Simply contact ASA for assistance!

Internships in Dublin are structured to provide a balance between professional experience and personal exploration. Here's what you can expect:

  • Work Schedule: Summer Interns typically work four days a week, allowing for three-day weekends to travel and enjoy Dublin's vibrant culture.
  • Work Hours: The standard workday is 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. However, some placements may require flexibility, including occasional evening or weekend hours, depending on the nature of the work and the organization's needs.
  • Attendance: Full attendance is expected throughout the internship. If you anticipate needing time off due to illness or personal reasons, it's essential to notify both your site supervisor and the ASA team promptly. Unauthorized absences can lead to dismissal from the program and may affect your academic standing.
  • Absence Policy: In cases of illness or other significant issues that prevent participation for more than two weeks, ASA will collaborate with you and your home institution to arrange a suitable academic alternative. However, leave for reasons other than illness or approved personal matters is not permitted.
  • Conduct and Performance: As an intern, you represent both your home institution and ASA. Maintaining a professional demeanor is crucial. Unsatisfactory performance or unacceptable behaviour can result in removal from the placement and a failing grade for the internship course.

This structure ensures that you gain meaningful work experience while also having the opportunity to immerse yourself in Dublin's rich cultural landscape.

Important Note: While there are currently no internship placements in science, math, engineering, or medical industries, students from these fields can still gain valuable professional experience through a Dublin internship.

If you have a particular industry in mind that isn’t listed above, contact ASA. We’ll work with you to see if your desired placement might be possible.

Selecting Your Three Industry Choices

You should select three industry areas of interest that coincide with:

  • your major (and/or minor, if applicable)
  • your previous work/internship experience(s)
  • your desired future career path

Keep in mind you MUST select three different main industry choices. Provided that you have the relevant skills and experience, we strive to place you in an internship that is as close to your original requests as possible. However, please keep in mind that while we will try to place you within your first choice area, we will utilize second and third choices if and when necessary, and will often use a combination of all three.

You can expect to receive your placement upon arrival. You will be provided with all the details about the company, your schedule, the type of work/projects, location, and any dress code.

ASA is a small program, but that’s what makes it so great. The personal attention can’t be beat and I made plenty of friends outside of the group.

Chelsea Francis

I would recommend ASA to other students because not only was it a great price for what you get, but it was so much fun and the site director was great.

Morgan Pecknold

ASA is a very thorough program. It is well organized and structured, yet allows for plenty of independent activity and personal responsibility. There were many times where I felt foreign, but I rarely felt like a tourist. I engaged in the culture with the ASA program, I didn’t just take a picture and a souvenir
