TERMINOLOGY

At Newcastle University, a course is called a “module”.

Fall is called Semester 1, and Spring is called Semester 2. Modules marked “Semester 1 and 2” are full-year modules and can only be taken by students enrolling for the full academic year. Modules marked “Semester 1 or 2” are offered during both Fall and Spring.

(Inactive) – If you see this next to a module title it means the module is not available this year.

STAGES

  • Stage 1 modules are for Year 1 undergraduate students. These are introductory modules, designed to provide a basis for more advanced and specialized modules. These generally do not have pre-requisites. (e.g. HIS1044)

  • Stage 2 modules are for Year 2 undergraduate students. These modules assume substantial understanding and aim to both broaden and deepen knowledge of the subject matter. These modules may have pre-requisites. (e.g. BUS2021)

  • Stage 3 modules are for Year 3 or Final Year undergraduate students. These modules form the highest level of undergraduate modules and provide highly specialized instruction. You are likely to need permission from Newcastle to take these modules, and must have taken relevant pre-requisite classes. (e.g. BIO3050)

HOW MANY MODULES CAN I TAKE?

Students will take 3-5 modules per semester (60 UK credits in total).

MANDATORY ALTERNATE MODULES

You MUST have a total of 7-8 modules approved by your home institution. This will give you back-ups in case of schedule conflicts or cancellations.

CREDITS

Single modules are worth 3-4 semester credits (20 UK credits). Students who take the normal course load of 3 single modules per semester will earn 12 U.S. semester credits. Some modules are “double modules” which means they are worth 2 single modules (15 ECTS or 30 UK credits per double module). You can substitute a double module for 2 single modules if your home institution approves it. 10 UK credits represent 100 study hours. You must take 60 UK credits in a semester.

  • Study abroad students are not permitted to enroll in any Law courses.

  • Syllabi for most courses are available at the above link, but if you find there’s a syllabus that cannot be accessed, please request it by contacting us and including the course code and title.
