Fall Study Abroad Destinations: Where Will You Go?

ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND

Great choice for you if…you are curious about your Scottish ancestry to spend time outdoors in a picturesque landscape.

Fun fact: Aberdeen ranks highly for safety! In fact, it has repeatedly been rated the safest city in the UK.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE

Great choice for you if…are a culture vulture and appreciate visual art, ballet, music or theater (and would love to be able to buy your fruit and veggies in a a bustling outdoor market).

Fun fact: Aix is known as the “City of Fountains”. There are 43 of them, with water coming from the Verson river or thermal springs. Related fact: It’s also a great place for a day at the spa!

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Great choice for you if…you love the seaside and the city equally. There’s almost three miles of coastline running alongside Barcelona with all of the perks of city life at your fingertips (and about 60 miles of coastline along the province).

Fun fact: Barcelona is the only city in the world that has a Royal Gold Medal for architecture. It’s from the Royal Institute of British Architects which (since 1848) has been awarding individual or groups of architects for their achievements in architecture. Barcelona’s architecture is so impressive, in this case, they awarded the entire city!

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Great choice for you if…You want to improve your Spanish, love to go out dancing, and thrive in a lively environment.

CUZCO, PERU

Great choice for you if…you’ve always dreamed of hiking Maccu Picchu, have a fascination with Incan culture and history, and want to go somewhere known for its warm and welcoming locals.

Fun fact: The 27 bus lines in Cuzco have fun names like “Batman”, “El Correcaminos” (“Road Runner”) and “El Expreso el Zorro” (“The Fox Express”).

DUBLIN, IRELAND

Great choice for you if…you prefer a city with a small-town atmosphere, but with all of legendary lively ambiance, music and friendly reputation of the Irish people that Dublin provides.

Fun fact: Dublin is the Silicon Valley of Europe with the European headquarters of many of the tech giants based here (think the likes of Google, Facebook, Etsy, LinkedIn, Tinder, Airbnb, Amazon, and many more alongside tons of start-ups too)

FLORENCE, ITALY

Great choice for you if…you are a foodie, fashion lover, art enthusiast or history buff looking for a walkable city and breath-taking views along the way

LONDON, ENGLAND

Great choice for you if…you want a diverse location that has something for everyone. London is a city that can be sliced and diced to build a semester abroad that suits just about anyone’s interests, no matter how eclectic or unusual.

Fun fact: Though England has a reputation for rain, London actually has less rain (both in volume and number of days) than “sunny” cities like Sydney, Rome and Miami.

MAASTRICHT, THE NETHERLANDS

Great choice for you if…you are often guided by your tastebuds (Maastricht has some incredible food!), are a history enthusiast, and are looking for somewhere beautiful that makes European travel easy.

Fun fact: The city still has many of its medieval walls from the 13th and 14th centuries. There are gates and fortifications to stumble on as well, and even a medieval toilet to find in one of the city walls near Hell’s Gate.

MADRID, SPAIN

Great choice for you if…you love sunny weather, think great food is important, are a night owl (dinner’s typically around 9pm and things move on from there), want to be surrounded by the culture and bustle of a city but also appreciate green space.

Fun fact: Madrid is home to the oldest restaurant in the world (est. 1725) with the same interiors from the 18th century. It has been mentioned in novels by Ernest Hemingway, Frederick Forsyth, Graham Greene, and James A. Michener.

NEWCASTLE, ENGLAND

Great choice for you if…want to be close to the beach, enjoy galleries and museums, are looking for great nightlife, or are a soccer fan. It’s also a great base for easy day trips around the UK.

Fun fact: The local Geordie accent was voted as Britain’s most friendly, so make sure you speak to a local and see if you agree.

OXFORD, ENGLAND

Great choice for you if…you want to be in a student centric city, have an appreciation for incredible old architecture and history, or love literature.

Fun fact: Per square mile, Oxford has more published authors than anywhere else in the entire world. Some familiar names? JRR Tolkien, CS Jewis, Lewis Carroll and Mark Haddon, to name a few.

PARIS, FRANCE

Great choice for you if…you are are looking for a bustling diverse city and are an art enthusiast, fashion lover, or foodie (or are just really into “Emily in Paris”).

Fun fact: Paris is home to the world’s largest art museum and the most visited: the Louvre! There’s more than 38,000 works of art housed here including, of course, the Mona Lisa.

PAROS ISLAND, GREECE

Great choice for you if…you love the beach and the sun, would like a slightly slower pace of life for a change, enjoy art and savor the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine.

Fun fact: Paros is famous for its Parian marble, which is white, semi-transparent, and used for sculpture as well as in the construction of the Acropolis and many other famous structures. Though the quarries are now abandoned, this was once the biggest source of the island’s wealth.

ROME, ITALY

Great choice for you if…you want to study in a dynamic and well-connected capital city, are a history buff, appreciate art and cultural events, or are interested in learning Italian.

Fun fact: There’s free water for the public here with drinking fountains everywhere – more than 2,500 of them, a tradition started in the early 1870s ad continued today. Check out the app ‘I Nasoni di Roma’ if you want to re-fill your water bottle.

SEVILLE, SPAIN

Great choice for you if…you would love to learn to dance flamenco, tapas sound like the perfect meal, you have an interest in Moorish history, or see yourself filling your free time with art and culture.

Fun fact: You may recognize areas of Seville from several big movies like Game of Thrones, Star Wars: Episode II, Knight and Day, and Lawrence of Arabia.

SORRENTO, ITALY

Great choice for you if…you would enjoy hiking along the Amalfi Coast, love lemons, thrive by the sea and in the sun, have an interest in craftsmanship or appreciate beautiful sunsets.

Fun fact: Sorrento is famous for its lemons, some as big as baseballs. There’s a unique microclimate here which means they soak in the sun and avoid the wind. You’ll spot them everywhere!

VIÑA DEL MAR, CHILE

Great choice for you if…you love the beach (choose from golden, white, or black sand!), your idea of a tasty meal includes seafood, you want to experience local nightlife, or you’ve always wanted to take a trip to Easter Island or Patagonia.

Fun fact: The Viña del Mar International Song Festival is Latin America’s oldest and biggest music festival. It was cancelled the past two years because of Covid-19, but has otherwise been running annually since 1960.
