7 Reasons to Study Abroad in Florence

Words and photos by Maddie Firmin who is studying abroad in Florence during Spring semester 2022.

Deciding on a study abroad destination is extremely difficult with so many cities and countries to choose from. After traveling to other countries on weekend trips, I always find myself excited to return to my host city of Florence, Italy, which is a popular study abroad location for a reason!

Here are seven reasons why you should study abroad in Florence:

1. THE SIZE. Florence is a small and walkable city, but it’s still large enough that you will never run out of things to see and explore. I love being able to walk everywhere and avoid the hassle and costs of public transportation. Walking everywhere is also great exercise and allows me to discover new cafes and restaurants I wouldn’t have otherwise. ASA also provides apartments close to the city center, so you are only a few minutes away from your classes, grocery stores, cafes, restaurants, and attractions.

2. AFFORDABILITY. Florence is affordable. Housing here through ASA costs much less than most housing back home. The cost of living in Florence is very affordable compared to my experience in the United States. I often purchase a week’s worth of groceries for as little as €20! The café attached to our host university, Florence University of the Arts (FUA), has great deals on food and drinks; they sell cappuccinos for around €1.

3. THE FOOD! Italy is known for its delicious food and Florence will not disappoint. Mouth-watering pizza, pasta, sandwiches, pastries, and more are around every corner. Whenever I leave the country for weekend trips, I find myself craving pizza and pasta from our favorite local restaurant. People in Italy truly care about the quality of their food, ingredients, and preparations. I truly believe you will not find better food than here in Italy.

4. THE CLASSES. The classes are immersive. At Florence University of the Arts through ASA, the classes utilize an experiential learning approach with service-based learning options. Here you learn by doing. In my “Florence Food and Culture” class, instead of lectures, we spend the time cooking traditional dishes. In my other classes, we go out into the community and apply what we are learning to the real world. Internships are available to take your learning and immersion to the next level too.

5. ITS BEAUTY. There are beautiful views and green spaces. Florence has many parks, gardens, and hilltop views for when you need a break from the city center. You can enjoy Aperitivo at a restaurant on the river or read a book in the rose garden overlooking Florence. Be sure to watch the sunset with friends from Piazzale Michelangelo.

6. EASY TO TRAVEL. Florence has great access to other cities and countries. The train station, bus station, and airport in Florence allow you to affordably explore just about any city or country in Europe that you desire. You are able to easily check off your European bucket list here through weekend trips!

7. THE PEOPLE. Florence is able to have a local feel despite being a popular tourist city. The people here are friendly and many locals, especially those who work in restaurants and shops, speak English. I have had no difficulties communicating with people while also having opportunities to practice Italian. Because Florence is a popular study abroad destination, you will also meet many other students who are all in the same boat as you!
