Choosing a study abroad location is simple for some students; they have known exactly where they’re going to study for years. Most students, however, face a decision that can be very difficult, though deciding where in the world you are going to spend your next winter break, summer break, semester or academic year is a very good problem to have!

This article will overview some important decision factors and questions for you to ask yourself while trying to figure out just the right location for you.

If you want to study a foreign language…

One of the first things to consider is foreign languages. Do you speak another language? Are you looking to improve upon a language you are learning? Do you want your new home to be in a country where the conversation will be conducted in English? These are important questions to ask yourself as certain programs are language-intensive or only offer certain courses in English.

If you are interested in furthering your foreign language skills, companies like Academic Studies Abroad, offer Spanish language programs in locations such as Buenos Aires – Argentina, Viña del Mar – Chile, and many locations throughout Spain. Looking to master your French? Check out our programs in Aix-en-Provence or Paris, France!

If you want to live with a host family…

Another important question to ask yourself is about housing. What kind of living situation would you like to have while you’re abroad? Perhaps, if you’re trying to master your language skills, living with a host family is the best option for you.

There are programs that have student apartments available that are off-campus. On-campus housing in residence halls is an option, and there are some programs that will allow you to find your own housing altogether.

The ASA advisors you work with throughout your process will be able to help you figure out which housing option is best for you, which will narrow down the list of where you could study abroad. Keep in mind that some programs require students to live in a specific situation. For example, our Aix-en-Provence program only allows students to live with host families.

If you need to take a specific course while abroad…

Next, are there specific courses you want to take abroad? Did you leave some general elective classes you need to fill or want to spend a semester dedicated to a subject of your interest? Make sure the school you will be studying at offers the course load you desire! Some universities have hundreds of courses for abroad students to enroll in, while others have a smaller selection.

Again, work with your study abroad advisors at your home university to see what requirements you need to fill, as well as ASA advisors to figure out what courses are offered at the university you are thinking of studying at. Your advisors are well-versed in course offerings by location and will be able to fit you in the right program based on your academic needs!

As previously mentioned, the “problem” of not knowing where you want to study abroad is a great problem to have. There are many opportunities and study abroad locations available around the world, each providing their own incredible experiences. With a little help from expert advisors in the field, you will find just the right one for you and have the adventure of a lifetime!
