Meal Ideas While Studying Abroad

Words and photos by Anika Woelffer, our Jetsetter Journalist who is studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy, during Spring semester 2024.

Cooking at “home” while studying abroad can be a little intimidating! You're in a completely different country, the grocery stores look different, there are different products, and there is a good chance you're navigating a language barrier.

You might find yourself eating out a lot during the first few weeks, but this can come with a hefty price tag. Although it can be a little scary going to the grocery store the first time, my best piece of advice is to go with a group of people. You have power in numbers and won't feel as uncomfortable trying to figure out your way around.

Specifically in Sorrento, Italy, there is one main grocery store, but many smaller markets. I used to only shop at the main grocery store, but I realized that markets are much cheaper and have fresher food. It's best when living abroad to “live as a local'' so you aren't paying more than you have to over four months.

Once you take the step to start shopping and cooking at home, there lies another challenge: what to make! There are so many yummy recipes you can cook, but I recommend trying new things or some dishes that the country is “known” for.

Here is a 5-day meal plan based on what I’ve been eating lately. The ideas here are super easy, tasty, and quick to cook!
