4 Unique Experiences To Have When You Study Abroad in Florence, Italy

Words and photos by Maddie Firmin who is studying abroad in Florence during Spring semester 2022.

Florence, Italy is one of the most beautiful cities. It is world-renowned for its art, architecture and food. Studying abroad gives you ample time to explore this city and experience all that it has to offer. Passing sights like the Duomo will become a daily occurrence on your walk to class. But studying abroad is a great opportunity to not just go sight seeing, but to be fully immersed in the city.

Here are four ways I like to spend my days in here and some unique ideas for when Florence is your study abroad host city.

1. CHEER FOR FIORENTINA AT A FOOTBALL MATCH. The energy at a European football match is unlike anything you will have ever experienced before! For lovers of soccer and sports, you’re bound to be in for an exciting game. However, it is a great time even for those that have never watched a soccer game before. The crowd is decked out in purple gear, waving flags while chanting and singing Italian songs.

2. HAVE A PICNIC AT GIARDINO DELLE ROSE AND WATCH THE SUNSET AT PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO. One of the best things to do in Florence is watching the sun set over the city with friends at Piazzale Michelangelo. Here you can find the most beautiful, sweeping views of Florence. Oftentimes there are musicians and artists around the Piazzale as people gather on the steps. This is a popular viewpoint and can be crowded, so if you are looking for something off the beaten path, I suggest setting up a picnic at Giardino Delle Rose for a view of the whole city while surrounded by flowers and plants. Another option is Giardino Antonino Caponnetto, a green space next to the Arno River. Bring some good food, a paint set, and some canvases and paint as the sun goes down.

3. HIKE THROUGH THE CHARMING STREETS AND VINEYARDS TO THE SMALL TOWN OF FIESOLE. Sitting upon the hillsides rising above Florence is the town of Fiesole. It has a small, local feel and is easily accessible from Florence. You can either take a short bus ride or hike through the streets with views of the Tuscan hills and the city down below. Hiking is my preferred option to get some exercise and fresh air while taking in the views. When you reach the town, take a walk around and explore the archeological site where there are various ruins including a Roman amphitheater.

4. TAKE A CERAMIC PAINTING OR COOKING CLASS. Take a cooking class and learn traditional meals from local chefs at Mercato Centrale. Learn to make dishes such as fresh pasta. This is a great way to learn some new recipes to take back home with you! If you are more artistic, consider taking a pottery class at Sbigoli Terrecotte. This is a great activity to do with some friends and you will end with a unique piece of painted pottery that you can take home as a souvenir.

 Thanks Maddie!
