3 Short Day Trips from Sorrento

Words and photos by Anika Woelffer, our Jetsetter Journalist who is studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy, during Spring semester 2024.

Living in Sorrento has provided me with unlimited opportunities to explore southern Italy. The convenient transportation, like buses, trains, and ferries, makes day trips not only easy but very affordable. It's been incredible to have these experiences and make lifelong memories with new friends. Here are three short day trips worth taking when you study abroad in Sorrento:

Naples

Recently, I was in Naples for an ASA excursion and it was such a cool experience. Naples is the capital of the Campania Region and offers everything from history to cuisine. It’s where pizza was first invented, but has a ton of other incredible food to try. One of my favorite things about Naples is that it's a coastal city. The old architecture plus the coast is breathtaking and makes it such a unique city. I highly recommend checking out the Lungomare Caracciolo for a panoramic view of the whole city and Piazza del Plebiscito which is the main square. Naples has so much to offer and, with it only being a €4.60 train ticket from Sorrento, it's a must-visit!

Pompeii

Another place that’s just a cheap and quick train ride away is the ancient city of Pompeii. Pompeii was once a thriving city, but in 79AD, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius buried it in lava. It has been remarkably preserved since then and is filled with history. The volcanic ash essentially froze the town in time so it's a neat experience to see what life was really like so long ago. Even if you aren't that big into history, Pompeii should be a must on your list.

Positano

Lastly, and probably the most “popular”, is Positano. This town has been increasingly becoming more popular by the year and I see it all over social media. It's definitely one of my favorites because it's only a €4 bus ride to the town. Now that comes with the winding roads on the edge of a cliff, but Positano is more than worth it. Positano is located on the Amalfi Coast and can be considered one of the most beautiful places in Italy. It's filled with pastel-colored buildings on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The beaches are beautiful and the food is incredible too. If you go anywhere in Italy, Positano should be at the top of your list!
