Summer Study Abroad: Latin America

If you missed our last post, here’s another reminder: It’s now just a few weeks to go until most of our summer program deadlines on March 1, 2022.

Do you have summer plans yet? If you’re open to ideas, we have a few…How about:

  • Learning to tango in Buenos Aires?

  • Hiking the Inca Trail in Peru to discover the “Lost City” of Machu Picchu in the Andes Mountains?

  • Whitewater rafting on the scenic Pacuare River in Costa Rica, which flows to the Caribbean Sea?

  • Surfing (or learning to surf!) along Chile’s 2,500-mile-long coastline?

Why Latin America? Seasons are flipped in the southern hemisphere, so some of the locations below have a mild July (think 50s-60s) while their winter season takes place. It’s a great escape for anyone who doesn’t like the summer heat. Or, if you love it hot, Costa Rica has you covered with temps regularly in the 80s at this time of year. You’ll have opportunities to earn credits, intern, live with locals for a full immersive experience and enjoy the vibrant lively cultures in this corner of the world.

Intrigued? Read on and find out which is our best Latin American location for you!

Note: Program costs are listed below but these are subject to change; always check the ASA website for most up to date pricing.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Great choice for you if…
you love to dance! Buenos Aires is the birthplace of Tango, which is still loved by locals today and plays an important role in Argentine culture.

Host: Universidad de Belgrano
Minimum GPA: 2.50
Housing: Argentine homestay

Fun fact: Buenos Aires was the first Latin America city to recognize LGBTQIA+ rights and is considered one of the most progressive countries in Latin American on this topic. Same-sex marriage was legalized in 2010 and the country more recently passed the Gender Identity Law, which provides legal gender identity changes to transgender citizens.

CUZCO, PERU

Great choice for you if…you love the great outdoors and the various adventures it allows, and would appreciate a change to escape a hot summer back home.

Host: Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola
Minimum GPA: 2.70
Housing: Peruvian homestay or residence hall

Fun fact: Cuzco was designed by the Inca to resemble the shape of a cougar (which was an important animal for them). The head is on a hill overlooking the city.

VIÑA DEL MAR, CHILE

Great choice for you if…
you are looking for university city vibes with lively nightlife and a chance to enjoy the beach.

Host: Universidad de Viña del Mar
Minimum GPA: 2.5
Housing: Chilean homestay

Fun fact: Castillo Wulff is set on the coastline and has a glass floor you can walk on at the back. It hangs from the edge so you can look down on the sea below you.
