Summer Study Abroad: Europe

Mark your calendars: It’s just one month and counting until most of our summer program deadlines on March 1, 2022.

How are you spending your summer? If you’re not sure, we have a few a ideas…How about:

  • A music festival in Aix-en-Provence?

  • Exploring the surreal architecture of Barcelona?

  • Indulging your inner history buff in The Netherlands?

  • Learning to make pasta from scratch in Rome?

  • Dancing at Spanish fiestas in Seville?

  • Hiking coastal paths along the Mediterranean in Italy?

Why Europe? They’re in summer at the same time as us, so you won’t miss the sun. There are opportunities for language learning as well as studying in English, internships and picking up some extra academic credits. Plus, it’s easy to take short side trips on weekends and breaks to explore nearby countries and cultures.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE

Great choice for you if…
you love music! Two annual summertime festivals gather world-class musicians and directors to the city and you’ll find classical, jazz, and popular music emanating from outdoor theatres and venues throughout the city.

Host: IAU: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The French Honors Program, and The Marchutz School of Fine Arts
Minimum GPA: 2.50
Cost: Ranging from $5,995 to $10,395 depending on host institution and number of credits
Housing: French homestay
Internships available: Yes, for students who have completed at least four semesters of college French

Fun fact: Aix-en-Provence was the home of painter Paul Cézanne, whose works were inspired by the beautiful landscape surrounding the city.

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Great choice for you if…you are an architecture enthusiast. From the centuries-old Gothic Quarter to the sophisticated, tree-lined boulevards of the Eixample district to  Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí’s modernist, surreal creations across the city, there’s an array of vastly different styles to discover.

Host: Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB); Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF); CETT-UB: School of Tourism, Hospitality, and Gastronomy; ESADE Business School
Minimum GPA: 2.50
Cost: Ranging from $5,495 to $7,695 (some TBA) depending on host institution and number of credits
Housing: Choose between a shared apartment, Spanish homestay, or off-campus residence hall with or without a meal plan
Internships available: No

Fun fact: Camp Nou, home to the famous FC Barcelona (or Barça), is Europe’s largest football (soccer) stadium with 99,354 seats.

DUBLIN, IRELAND

Great choice for you if…You’re looking for a small college town vibe with a bigger city at your fingertips and, of course, if you love a bit of craic (the Irish word for fun, banter, and good times).

Fun fact: The famous lion used at the start of MGM movies since 1957 was born in Dublin Zoo. They’re currently working with their 8th lion who is named Leo.

FLORENCE, ITALY

Great choice for you if…
can never have enough art, historical architecture or gelato (which was invented here!) 

Host: Florence University of the Arts
Minimum GPA: 2.75
Cost: Ranging from $4,595 to $6,995 depending on program length and number of credits
Housing: Shared apartments
Internships available: Yes

Fun fact: It is home to roughly 1/3 of the world’s art treasures! According to UNESCO, Italy holds 60% of the most important art pieces in the world, and half of these are in Florence.

LONDON, ENGLAND

Great choice for you if…want to fill up your calendar with cultural experiences (theater, museums, galleries, music and more)

Host: University of the Arts London, University of Roehampton, London South Bank University
Minimum GPA: 2.80
Cost: Ranging from $5,095 to $14,995 depending on host institution, program length and number of credits
Housing: Residence halls

Fun fact: London is one of the most diverse cities in the world with 30% of the population of overseas descent. Some 300 languages are spoken here.

MAASTRICHT, THE NETHERLANDS

Great choice for you if…
you’re looking for rich history, apparent in medieval town ramparts, 17th century townhouses, cobblestone streets and charming squares... but also a perfect base from which to explore more of Europe.

Fun fact: You can visit an old mill called Bisschopmolen dating back to the 7th century. It’s still in use and produces flour still today. Next door there is a bakery where you can try Limburgse vlaai, a famous local pastry made from the flour.

PAROS, GREECE

Great choice for you if…you’re looking to spend your summer not only learning, but also soaking up the sun on endless sandy beaches and swimming in clear blue seas.

Host: Hellenic International Studies in the Arts
Minimum GPA: 3.0
Cost: Ranging from $4,995 to $7,995 depending on program length and number of credits
Housing: Cycladic studio apartments
Internships available: No

Fun fact: Many Greek islands are associated with mystical gods and masculinity, but Paros has a heroine instead. The house of Manto Mavrogenous, the women (who spent her fortunes supporting the freedom of Paros from external rule to become part of Greece) is still found near Ekatontapiliani church.

ROME, ITALY

Great choice for you if…you’re fascinated by ancient history and would love to learn how to make pasta from scratch

Host: John Cabot University
Minimum GPA: 2.67
Cost: Ranging from $6,995 to $8,595 depending on program length and number of credits

Internships available: No

Fun fact: Every night, about €3,000 are collected from the depths of the Trevi Fountain and is donated to Caritas, a catholic charity that helps locals in need.

SEVILLE, SPAIN

Great choice for you if…you love to dance, listen to music, and join in on a fiesta or a lively conversation

Fun fact: Seville was used as a filming location for Game of ThronesLawrence of ArabiaStar Wars: Episode II, and Knight and Day

SORRENTO, ITALY

Great choice for you if…you appreciate sunshine, unbeatable coastal views, long hikes, and comforting Italian food.

Host: Sant’Anna Institute
Minimum GPA: 2.5 (or 3.0 if you include an internship)
Cost: Ranging from $5,695 to $7,395 depending on program length, number of credits and housing choice
Housing: Italian homestay or residence hall
Internships available: Yes

Fun fact: Though the city has certainly been called “sun-drenched”, the ancient Greeks thought ahead when they designed the narrow streets, purposefully positioning them to create shade in what is a very walkable city.
